ABSTRACT

@#AIM: To compare the non-invasive tear film break-up time(NIBUT), tear break up time(TBUT), basal tear secretion(BTS)and blink rate in four ethnic groups: Malay, Chinese, Indian and Nigerian.<p>METHODS: Totally 120 healthy(61 males and 59 females)subjects(without dry eye symptoms and ocular surface disorder)with the age 20 to 39 years were recruited; 30 were Malays, 30 were Chinese, 31 were Indians and 29 were Nigerians. Based on McMonnies questionnaire and clinical examination, normal subjects were selected. NIBUT, TBUT, BTS were assessed in only one eye(right)of each subject and blink rate was also assessed.<p>RESULTS: There was significant difference in the NIBUT, TBUT, BTS and blink rate among 4 different ethnic groups(<i>P</i>=0.018),(<i>P</i>=0.001),(<i>P</i>=0.011), and(<i>P</i>=0.004)respectively. No statistically significant difference of NIBUT, TBUT, BTS and blink rate was found between the genders among different ethnic groups. Indian had higher median for NIBUT(10±6s), TBUT(7±5s)and BTS(20±20 mm)than others races. Chinese had lower median for NIBUT(7.5±4s)and TBUT(4±2s)while Malay had low BTS(9.5±16 mm)among the groups. There was no significant correlation of blink rate with NIBUT, TBUT and BTS(<i>r</i>= -0.119, <i>P</i>=0.195),(<i>r</i>=-0.086, <i>P</i>=0.352),(<i>r</i>= -0.123, <i>P</i>=0.180)respectively.<p>CONCLUSION: This study showed the variability in tear-film measurements values in four ethnic groups.

ABSTRACT

The purpose to do this research was to find out the habits of contact lens wearers towards lens care in this country, and to evaluate the compliance of contact lens wearers. Methods: All respondents underwent an interview regarding questionnaire which was carried out at the Klang Valley and Sabah, Malaysia by trained bilingual optometrists. The questionnaire was obtained from a study by Yvonne Wu et al., 2010. The questionnaire included information about respondents' demographics, contact lens hygiene behaviors and attitudes toward lens care. Comparison between groups and certain factors of lens care were analyzed. Results: Within the 100 respondents, 74% were female. The majority used monthly disposable lens (53%, 53/100), 35% (35/100) wore daily lens, 3% (3/100) wore biweekly disposable lens, 8% (8/100) wore quarter-yearly (3 months) lens, and only a participant (1%) used conventional lenses. The major non-compliance aspect that found out from this research were poor lens case (46%), inadequate cleaning of lens before storing (38%) and wearers not remembering how often they were advised to return for an aftercare (24%). Conclusion: The poor lens care hygiene, inadequate cleaning of lens before storing may due to lack of proper advice to the contact lens wearers during examination or lack of awareness of aftercare visit.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to describe the correlation of findings between results from spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and microperimetry in a case series regarding patients with Goldmann-Favre syndrome. Goldmann-Favre syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive hereditary vitreo-retinal degeneration that impacts the functionality of vision in subjects. Three men with this condition were assessed and subjected to microperimetry and SD-OCT. Two of the men were brothers. This study finds that the retinoschisis and macular cystoid changes noted in the SD-OCT matched the scotomas revealed by the microperimetry. The findings of each of the individual cases are reported herein.
